“ Marry your best friend. I do not say that lightly. Really, truly find the strongest, happiest friendship in the person you fall in love with. Someone who speaks highly of you. Someone you can laugh with. The kind of laughs that make your belly ache, and your nose snort. The embarrassing, earnest, healing kind of laughs. Wit is important. Life is too short not to love someone who lets you be a fool with them. Make sure they are somebody who lets you cry, too. Despair will come. Find someone that you want to be there with you through those times. Most importantly, marry the one that makes passion, love, and madness combine and course through you. A love that will never dilute - even when the waters get deep, and dark. „

“ If you believe that a single GOP player in this upcoming clusterfuck of investigations is going to pause and think, “Huh. You’re right. I didn’t care when George W. Bush did the same or worse. I should end this hypocrisy,” you are as delusional as the most extreme Benghazi conspiracy theorists, the ones who think that the IRS thing is Obama’s way to distract from the far, far worse Benghazi “scandal.” (No, really, Rush Limbaugh believes this.)

Your argument is noted, good liberals who still smart from the lack of prosecution of anyone for the crimes and excesses of the Bush administration. Indeed, it was laughable when today John Boehner asked regarding the IRS asking conservative groups extra questions, “Who’s going to jail over this scandal?” Your first instinct might be to say, “Oh, shut the fuck up, Annoying Orange.”

There is only one thing that’ll end this madness: End the madness of GOP control in the House and prevent them from gaining control of the Senate. „

Sheila E doing “Glamorous Life” at the American Music Awards in 1985. This performance is bonkers. For the first third she sings lead while standing and also playing the lead percussion part. Then she takes the mic and dances around. And then the lights on stage go dark and she solos on drums in the dark with glow-in-the-dark sticks.

Two things occur to me watching this, and recently revisiting Sheila E’s first two albums. One, Prince in the 1980s was the kind of pop genius that comes along every 20-30 years, maybe. The amount of brilliant, boundary-pushing, but still accessible music he was responsible for, as both a solo performer or, as with this song, as a writer/producer, is simply astonishing.  It’s honestly like talking about Albert Einstein in 1905, that’s how in the zone he was. It was a decade of a true and lasting genius by an artist at the height of his powers who was given all kinds of resources. A rare thing.

The second thing is what a talent Sheila E was (and probably still is, though I haven’t heard anything she’s done in some time). She had a few big hits, two good records, and came from a remarkable family of musicians (she had several first-call percussionists of note in her family). In the late 1980s she was Prince’s live drummer and also was also the leader of his backing band (you can see her considerable skills behind a proper kit in the Sign O the Times film). Imagine what it takes to be Prince’s musical director in those years, for him to hand over the keys.

Put down whatever you are doing and make sure you watch this video.

Also before the drum solo somebody comes out and puts a white fur coat on her.

NOBODY DOES IT BETTER.

The thing that kills me about the Benghazi conspiracy theorists…

robot-heart-politics:

…is how little they know about any of the events surrounding the attacks.

They aren’t aware that the video actually did spark protests—some of them violent—in several countries, on the same day as the attacks and Benghazi and after.

They aren’t aware of statements officials made regarding Benghazi, allegations of terrorism, or connections to Al Qaeda in the days and weeks  following the Benghazi attack.

In many cases, they don’t even know where Benghazi is or what country it’s part of.

They know a handful of select “facts” and, completely disregarding any and all context, have run with this absurd fantasy that there is some massive coverup about Al Qaeda’s involvement in the Benghazi attack or the fact that it was a coordinated attack, which is apparently a secret that’s been hidden for months, even though officials have been making statements about this from within days of the attack happening and anyone who isn’t wearing a tinfoil hat and has been paying attention was already aware of months ago.

There is no scandal here. I keep asking people, “What do you think happened? Why should I be upset?” and so far, no one has told me anything that isn’t 1) completely false, 2) a fact stripped of all context, and/or 3) something totally commonplace and to be expected that’s only outrageous because of its association with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Benghazi can be tossed into the conservative conspiracy crapper along with death panels and teleprompters.

‘Geography of Hate’ maps racism and homophobia on Twitter
Twitter, even more than many other social media tools, can feel disconnected from the real world. But a group of students and professors at research site Floating Sheep have built a comprehensive map of some of Twitter’s most distasteful content: the racist, homophobic, or ableist slurs that can proliferate online. Called Geography of Hate, the interactive map charts ten relatively common slurs across the continental US, either by general category or individually. Looking at the whole country, you’ll often see a mass of red or what the map’s creators call a “blue smog of hate.” Zooming in, however, patches appear over individual regions or cities; some may be predictable, while others are not.

“

I was recently at a Senate meeting where I heard a member of our Senate community say, ‘God won’t allow us to ruin our planet.’ Maybe that’s why we do nothing. We are comfortable that God somehow won’t allow us to ruin our planet… The statement that ‘God won’t allow us to ruin our planet’ sweeps aside ethics, responsibilities, consequences, duties, even awareness. It comforts us with the anodyne assumption that no matter what we do, some undefined presence will, through some undefined measure, make things right - clean up our mess. That is seeking magical deliverance from our troubles, not divine guidance through our troubles…

We’re to continue to pollute our Earth with literally megatons each year of carbon, heating up our atmosphere, acidifying our seas, knowing full well by [God’s] natural laws what the consequences are, and instead of correcting our own behavior, we’re going to bet on a miracle? That’s the plan?…

We need to face up to the fact that there is only one leg on which climate denial stands. Money. The polluters give and spend money to create false doubt. The polluters give and spend money to buy political influence. The polluters give and spend money to keep polluting. That’s it. Not truth, not science, not economics, not safety, not policy and certainly not religion nor morality. Nothing supports climate denial. Nothing except money. But in Congress, in this temple, money rules. So here I stand, in one of the last places on earth that is still a haven to climate denial.

“ I began to realize how important it was to be an enthusiast in life. If you are interested in something, no matter what it is, go at it full speed ahead. Embrace it with both arms, hug it, love it and above all become passionate about it. Lukewarm is no good. Hot is no good, either. White hot and passionate is the only thing to be. „
